The register should be maintained in written form, including electronic form (Art. 30(3) GDPR), so the methods of updating it may depend on how it is maintained. A register stored on, for example, Microsoft SharePoint allows the restoration of historical versions (by clicking on the file name in the top bar and then on the "Version history" tab).
Another approach is simply to save successive versions of the register in electronic form with the date of each specific version in a designated folder, or to record the date of each entry made in the register.
