Data security in finance and insurance – business case

GDPR: experience in the financial and insurance sectors

Banks, lending institutions and insurance companies process huge amounts of personal data, such as data on identity, income, assets and often health. In the financial sector, the GDPR requires full transparency of data processing, effective consent management and adequate security of extensive CRM systems, transaction platforms and mobile applications. An additional challenge is working with external partners – agents, intermediaries or IT service providers – where it is easy to breach rules on entrustment of processing or risk unauthorised access to data.

ODO 24 has led projects for financial and insurance institutions with a distributed operational structure. We implemented comprehensive customer consent management systems, updated records of processing activities, prepared data protection policies and strengthened incident response procedures. Together with compliance and IT departments, we also developed rules for cooperation with external partners, which reduced contractual risks and increased operational security.

GDPR and cybersecurity – challenges for the financial and insurance industries

Financial and insurance institutions process highly sensitive data – from credit and asset information to health data used in risk assessment processes. Protecting such data is not only a requirement of the GDPR, but also a need for a high level of digital resilience, governed among other things by the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA).

DORA introduces uniform rules for ICT risk management across the financial sector – including for banks, insurance companies, payment institutions and technology service providers. Among other things, it covers responsibilities for systems resilience testing, incident management, business continuity and oversight of third-party providers (e.g. cloud providers or transaction systems).

Combining the requirements of the GDPR with DORA regulations is not only a matter of compliance, but above all a practical strategy for strengthening customer trust, protecting data and ensuring uninterrupted operation of key financial services in an environment of ever-increasing digital threats.

How much do GDPR services cost for the financial and insurance sectors?

The cost of implementation depends on the complexity of the organisation, the number of customer service channels and integrations with external partners. We offer packages covering an audit, adaptation of documentation and systems and training for employees. We prepare individual quotes – tailored to the scale and type of services.

What GDPR problems most commonly occur in this sector?

The most common are incorrectly collected marketing consents, failure to update processing registers and excessively broad access to customer data. Cooperation with partners where well-drafted data processing agreements are lacking is also risky.

Does a company in the financial sector have to have a Data Protection Officer (DPO)?

In most cases – yes. The scope and nature of the data mean that the Data Protection Officer (DPO) is not only an obligation but also a real source of support. We offer an outsourced DPO service tailored to the company's structure.

Which data are most sensitive in finance and insurance?

These are identification, financial, credit and payment-capacity data, and in the case of insurance also health data. Particular attention should be paid to data processed in CRM systems and mobile applications.

Does the GDPR also apply to telephone contacts and helplines?

Yes – conversations, data from forms, recordings, contact history – all of that is subject to the GDPR. Consents, processing purposes and control over who has access to that data are important.

Will GDPR implementation disrupt customer service?
